Phyllis (Ackney) Vesey Obituary

Passed away peacefully on Sunday June 9, 2024, at the age of 96, surrounded throughout her final days by the love of her family. Wife of the late James “Jim” Vesey. Loved and will be deeply missed by her children William Vesey (Anne Price), Janet Brunott (Ed Brunott), MaryLynn Vesey (Rick Griesi) and her three grandchildren Ryan Brunott, Lian Griesi and James Griesi.

Phyllis was born in Utica Ontario where her family settled in 1851 after leaving Scotland. After losing the family farm in Utica, during the Depression, they moved to Uxbridge where she spent her early youth and teen years. Phyllis bravely left Uxbridge at 18 to pursue her passion for fashion design and graduated from the Letchford Studio of Fashion Careers in Toronto, where her expertise of dressmaking, tailoring, millinery and design work were perfected and continued until she was well into her 80’s.  She married fellow Uxbridge boy Jim Vesey, her high school sweetheart in 1957. They built a life together and raised their three children in the Toronto suburb, “Willowdale”, losing her husband at 59 she remained there until 80, when at that time she returned to Uxbridge to live the last part of her independent life. Along the way she also shared much treasured family time at her cottage on beautiful Lake Kennisis in Haliburton.

Phyllis loved all things unique, describing herself, as a “self taught eclectic collector of everything rare and beautiful”. She spent a lifetime meeting unique and wonderful people that equally shared the love of antique collecting. The same passion was passed down to her children and grandchildren.

Phyllis will be remembered for her true zest for life, travel, and her natural ability to make her children and grandchildren feel like she was their biggest fan.  But most of all she will be remembered for her wonderful spirit, quirky sense of humour where her infectious laughter made any dull day brighter, she was a real treasure.

A private family burial at Uxbridge Cemetery has been entrusted to Low & Low Funeral Home, Uxbridge.  Friends may send condolences by visiting www.lowandlow.ca
