Marilyn Dobie Obituary

Passed away peacefully at Markham-Stouffville Hospital on Monday June 3, 2024 at the age of 91 years.  Born on a farm near Outlook, SK to Ted & Leita Hage (nee Smith), she was predeceased by sisters Fern Beaumont and Teddie Harty. She was most recently the wife of the late Stephen A. Bell and was previously married to the late George R. Dobie. She is lovingly remembered by her daughter Eve-Lynn(Dobie) Swan, son-in-law Mark Swan, cherished grandson Eric Swan, and nieces and nephews in Saskatchewan, Alberta and B.C.

Marilyn was a feisty, strong-willed woman, tending towards sarcastic humour, but she was also very kind and generous. She spent many years volunteering for Community Care, the Sandford United Church board, and the Sandford Womens' Institute.

Young Marilyn worked as a telephone operator in Saskatchewan, moving to Toronto in the early 1950s to work for Bell. Marilyn and George were keen participants in the early days of Ontario motorsport, racing their Sadler Formula Junior at Harewood Acres and Mosport. Overcoming severe injuries resulting from the 1960 crash of their Austin Healy, Marilyn lived with impaired use of her right arm and often commented on the kind assistance she received from the people of Uxbridge.

For the summer of 1966, Marilyn and George were part-owners of The Maples recreation park, south of Uxbridge, making many lifelong friends there. The Dobies bought 10 acres on Feasby Road in 1967 and built a log home on the land in 1972. Marilyn was a well-known resident there for the rest of her life.

Marilyn enjoyed flirting, singing, writing entertaining and poetic letters and emails, listening to Willie Nelson's music, and playing euchre, cribbage and contract rummy. She loved horses, cats, and morning coffee (not too early!), chocolate, wine, and Kawartha Dairy's pralines & cream ice cream.

Since a good party, preferably including a bonfire, was also a favourite thing, a celebration of Marilyn’s life featuring both will be held Saturday July 13, 2024 at the her residence 464 Feasby Road, Uxbridge commencing at 5:00 PM.

Cremation has been entrusted to Low & Low Funeral Home, Uxbridge.

As expressions of sympathy, memorial donations to the Alzheimer Society of Durham Region would be appreciated by the family.  Friends are invited to send condolences or make donations by contacting Low & Low Funeral Home at www.lowandlow.ca
