John McLeod Obituary

McLEOD; John Stuart

March 8, 1946 October 22, 2023

We are very deeply saddened by the loss of John Stuart McLeod (1946-2023).  Loving son of the late Donald Angus McLeod and Doreen McLeod (nee Burch). Loving father of James (Molly), Matthew and Kirk. Cherished big brother of Lesley (Campbell), Grant (Taya) and Phyllis (Michael). Grandpa of his two loved granddaughters; Sierra and Bailey. Uncle to many and best friend of Steve.

Our John was a gentle natured man who lived his life independent of anything that didn’t align with his values and beliefs. He had a shyness about him that was adorable. He excelled in auto body repair, teaching his sons how to fix things and to make something out of nothing. Skills that a young boy born one year after WWII ended, in England, had readily adopted.

John loved horror movies, (Chuckie, The Thing, Terminator) war movies, (Das Boot), war history, disco music, rap, his 1980’s stereo, aliens, UFO’s, and anything that invited a belly laugh. John will spark enthusiasm over an open-faced sandwich, hot wings, thin crust pizza and Old Cheddar.

John took fashion cues from no one. Several wide brimmed outdoor hiking hats, grass stained and worn-out shoes, and just about any worn and comfortable jacket or trousers with deep pockets.  John needed to carry things. And he was very vocal about that.

John had his own mind, and his own sense of logic. “Awwww that’s silly” he would say, or “you can’t fix that … it’s finished “, “it’s cooked”!

John’s big genuine smile and contagious laughter would fill any dining room, restaurant, Christmas dinner party, boat ride, auto repair shop, garage or walk in the woods.

John had a willingness to help others.  He would go out of his way to show a complete stranger how to do something. Always willing to share his knowledge and skill set, but never a know it all. John was modest, transparent and trustworthy. A rare breed indeed. In many ways John was very much like his father and mother.  And they were proud of him.

We found our John’s attitudes refreshing. A guy who particularly hated winter, mosquitoes, wet fire wood, anything sweet, his photo taken, and had no problem telling you. But mostly, John was a gentle soul who never had a bad word to say about anyone - unless they wore a mask outside.

Johnny travelled extensively on his wooded property, cutting trees, splitting wood, and running his self-made pulley system that carried his fresh firewood to his front porch.  He was unusually in sync with nature, loved to feed wild bunnies and would never hurt an animal. He was protective and kind hearted, especially to his family.

It should be noted that our John also had a love affair with red heads. His first love Linda, followed by several felines over the years to which he found his greatest joy of all “Strawberries “, “Puss Puss,” “Devils” and “Sweetums”; all of them referred to as “dear”.

John will always be loved and missed and we’re confident he will continue to spread his brand of humour as we remember his greatest gift of all to us - our shared laughter. RIP Johnny
