John Kerekes Obituary

It is with heavy hearts and great sadness that we announce the unexpected passing of John Kerekes on May 16, 2025, at the age of 82 years. John leaves behind a long list of family and close friends who will miss him immensely: his beloved wife of 55 years, Hilda (née Ferbeek); his loving children Karla (John) and Michael (Susan); his cherished grandchildren Justyn, Julia, Mikayla, and Marcus.  His lifetime best friends, Jim and Krista McMullen, along with William (Bill) and Jane (née Ferbeek) Hartwick. His sister, Margaret, and brother, Wolfgang (Karen), as well as many nieces and nephews. John is predeceased by his parents, Bela (a.k.a. Albert) and Maria (a.k.a. Mary) (née Strobel) Kerekes, and his dear brother Albert (June).

Born in Ehingen, Germany, on May 31, 1942, during World War II, John immigrated to Canada with his family at the age of nine. As the oldest child, the virtue of hard work and the importance of family were impressed upon John at the onset of his life.  Early in his life, John made significant contributions to his family’s success, which provided him with a solid foundation for his own family. He was the ultimate role model of someone who works hard and can figure out how to be self-reliant through repairing and building things independently.  No job was too big for John.  He has always been viewed as “the rock” for his entire family.  Whether coaching soccer, hockey, or cheering on the sidelines, no one could be relied upon more for help, with anything, than our dad.

With his kind and easy-going personality, John forged many close, lasting friendships throughout his life. His distinctive laugh could be quickly identified, and if heard, meant that John was in good company. Through these good times, he earned the nickname ‘Iron Man’ from his friends for his relentless approach to accomplishing many of life’s tasks, which he enjoyed and valued immensely!

Leveraging the hard work ethic he learned at such a young age, along with his craftsmanship with tools, John built his legacy:  the cottage on Elephant Lake.  It gave him a great sense of accomplishment and pride, knowing that it was a place for family and friends to gather and enjoy.  The cottage has been the heart of numerous family gatherings, countless memories, and summer adventures, fulfilling John’s dream.

John touched the lives of many, and his memory will be treasured by all who knew him.
