Gwendolyn "Gwen" Travis Obituary

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our mother, Gwendolyn “Gwen” Winnifred Travis nee Norris. She was born March 14, 1938 in Montreal, QC and passed away January 3, 2024 in Uxbridge, ON.

Gwen was the youngest daughter born to Victor and Madeleine Norris nee Maton. She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Leslie Norris (May), husband George Travis (June 1992), her sister Barbara and brother-in-law Ken Spina and brother-in-law Martin Hassam. She is survived by her sister Vivian Hassam of Wasaga Beach, ON.

Gwen was the proud mother of Keith Travis (Maureen) of Chapleau, ON; Elaine Scott (Stephen) of Perth, ON; and Nancy Clark (Bill) of Uxbridge, ON. She was blessed with six grandchildren: Aaron Travis (Josee) and Miles Travis of Chapleau, ON; Alexis Scott of Perth, ON; Alanna Travis of Edmonton, AB; Gillian Scott (David) of London, ON; Evelyn Joy (Adam) of Edmonton, AB; and her great granddaughter Sawyer Travis of Chapleau, ON. She is also remembered by many nieces and nephews.

Gwen supported her husband George in his career as a Canadian Pacific Railway policeman. They lived briefly in Montreal, QC, and then moved to Toronto, ON. After a few years, the family was moved to White River, ON, and finally to Chapleau, ON where they lived for 25 years. Gwen and George retired to Perth, ON in 1989.

Gwen was very active in her church and enjoyed singing in the choir. She was an avid knitter and seamstress and also loved to travel.

In 2006, Gwen decided to sponsor the building of two homes to house orphans in Uganda, Africa through Watoto Child Care Ministries. There are plaques on these homes bearing the names of George and Gwen Travis.

A celebration of Gwen’s life will be held at a later date. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Low & Low Funeral Home of Uxbridge. Friends are invited to send condolences by visiting www.lowandlow.ca.
