With deep sorrow and much love, we mourn the passing of our mother, oma, sister, aunt, and friend, Gerarda “Greta” Hoogers. Following a short battle with liver cancer, Greta passed away peacefully at the Oak Ridges Hospice in Port Perry on Tuesday, July 25th, 2023, at the age of 89 years. Greta will be deeply missed by her two sons; Peter and his wife Lianne; and Albert and his wife Rebecca; her five grandsons, Gregory, Andrew, Graham, Mason, and Ben; sisters Moep (Ben), Willy (Ted predeceased), Jopie predeceased (Ted), Anna (Ken predeceased), Betty, Trudy (Al predeceased), Liz (Gary), Josie (Jim), Berna (Ken) and brothers Kees (Anna predeceased), Jake predeceased, Henry (Tonnie), Peter (Wendy).
Born in Amsterdam, Holland, on November 13th, 1933, Greta was the second oldest of fourteen children and immigrated with her family to Canada in 1953 to begin a new life. After becoming a widow when she was 55, she continued to display tremendous strength, spirit, and determination in her life. A keen follower of world news and politics, Greta loved to debate with anyone who shared these interests. She loved life on the farm, spending time outdoors, and had a great sense of humour.
In place of flowers, we ask that memorial donations be given to the Oak Ridges Hospice of Durham or to the Port Perry Hospital Foundation, whose incredible staff consistently went above and beyond to ensure that Greta’s final days were comfortable.
Visitation will be held at the Low and Low Funeral Home, 1763 Reach Street, Port Perry (905-985-7331) on Saturday, July 29, 2023, from 1 p.m. until 4 p.m.
