Mentioned in Dispatches for Distinguished Service and decorated with the Oak Leaf Cluster, Don was promoted to Captain and, in the postwar years, to Major. He served as an Aide de Camp to Ontario Lieutenant Governors, the Honourable Keiller MacKay and Honourable Earl Rowe. Simmonds, David Claude
June 8, 1946 ~ Sept 13, 2011
Uxbridge Chapel
David passed away suddenly at home on the evening of Sept 13 in the presence of his beloved wife of 44 years Sue, and their son Peter. Loving husband of Suzanne Simmonds (Alton). Adored father of Paul, Anne Faulkner (Brad), Mark (Maureen), Elizabeth, Jonathan, Peter, and Rebecca. Amazing Grandfather to Mackenzie, Samantha, Markus and Jesse Alexander who will miss his warm hugs and kisses enormously. David was the oldest son of the late L. Claude Simmonds and Betty Simmonds (McNeill) with whom he spent time every day and who will miss him deeply. He was much loved by his 6 siblings Ruth, Anne and Bruce Bennett, John, Bruce and Tamara, Paul, Lois, and his special Aunt Ruth McNeill. David and his outgoing personality will be sadly absent from family gatherings, and his host of nephews, nieces, aunts, uncles and cousins will remember him fondly. After graduating from York Mills Collegiate, David was a very proud early student of the Co-op Engineering program at U of Waterloo. A born salesman, the success he realized during the work term portions of the program made him focus on the incredible opportunities in business, and he joined the family electronics business before completing his degree. Never regretting that decision, he achieved consistent success in business and was a significant contributor to the growth and success of A.C. Simmonds and Sons and its related businesses. Although in recent years, health challenges had reduced his level of business commitments, he remained the ultimate salesman and entrepreneur. David had a lifetime commitment of unwavering, faithful service in the Christian community. He served for many years on numerous Boards including Yonge St. Mission, World of Science, Stouffville Christian School, Ontario Pioneer Camp Committee and SU Sportz. At the time of his passing, he was the Chair of World Team. David was a long time Member of Immanuel Baptist and Uxbridge Baptist Churches, and had recently joined Goodwood Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon. Other than his family, David's greatest passion was 'the little church' at Glen Major, where following in the tradition established by his grandfather, A.C. Simmonds, and father, L. Claude Simmonds, upon the disability of Claude, he assumed leadership of the summer evening services in 1999. His faithfulness in that role was much appreciated by the Glen Major community. David was extraordinarily generous, almost to a fault. He loved debating politics, always from the perspective of his conservative viewpoint, and he loved living in the Uxbridge area of Ontario, in the country which he loved and of which he was a proud citizen. He will be greatly missed. For me to live is Christ, and to die is gain. Phil 1:21.Friends and Family were received on Friday, September 16th, 2011 from 3:00 – 5:00 p.m. and 7:00 – 9:00 p.m. at the Low and Low Funeral Home, 23 Main St. S. Uxbridge, ON, (905) 852 – 3073. Fr. Thomas Joseph Paul Thompson
Uxbridge Chapel
Our Dad, Fr. Thomas Joseph Paul Thompson, was born July 21, 1918 and died May 14, 2011 (the feast of St. Matthias) at the age of 92. These years were a devotion to Christ and His Church. Dad’s childhood, while a time that he recalled with great fondness, also involved tragedy: he nearly died from a protracted illness, then lost both his father and mother at an early age. The trauma was great, and when he left for school his academics suffered. His intellect was not to remain suppressed, however, and a brilliant academic career resulted in a masters degree in Latin and Greek. With the language of the Church mastered, he answered a call to the Catholic priesthood with the Basilian Order and taught at St. Michaels’ College School in Toronto. But upon meeting Helen Murphy, it became apparent that a dispensation from Rome to leave the practice of his priesthood and enter into marriage would be required. Joseph and Helen married, and eleven children were born into a family of vibrant Catholic Faith. Joseph continued his teaching career in Sarnia, Ontario, where his advocacy of unborn children resulted in a battle with the school board marked by student sit-ins supporting him and a lengthy court battle. Dad lost his job, but not his perseverance in his great fight against abortion. He worked as a janitor to support his family, enlivening them with his example, his love of God, his love of mothers and unborn children, and his rejection of any private or systemic encouragement of death. This example was rewarded with a return to teaching at St. Michael’s in Toronto. Dad’s intelligence was a conspicuous feature of his life, and particularly evident in his development of a new theological concept: using the Greek letter “chi,” he demonstrated how the scriptural assertion that “all things go in pairs by opposites” reveals the paradox at the heart of our existence. If we separate those paradoxical opposites we create disorder; if we observe them, we will be governed by a joyful order. His wife, our beloved Mother, died in 1994. Joseph consoled and guided his children through the aftermath of this tragedy with tremendous love. His duties as a husband discharged, he sought a return to the practice of his priesthood. Though obstacles arose, they were ultimately overcome by an unplanned encounter in Rome with Cardinal Ratzinger, who directly intervened to ensure Dad’s ministry as a priest would be resumed. The future Pope Benedict XVI saw, in a brief encounter, the great holiness that has characterized our Dad’s life. Our father died in a beautiful house surrounded by his children who were reciting the prayers he taught, and which sustained a life of loving devotion to his family and, first and foremost, Jesus Christ. One of his favourite quotes from his favourite author, G.K. Chesterton, precisely describes Dad’s life, which navigated with such success the pitfalls of what John Paul II termed the culture of death: “. . . to have avoided them all has been one whirling adventure; and in my vision, the heavenly chariot flies thundering through the ages, the dull heresies sprawling and prostrate, the wild truth reeling but erect.” May that chariot arrive him at the destination he always sought; may the body and blood of Christ bring him to everlasting life. Fr. Joseph is predeceased by his beloved wife Helen, his beloved grandchild Matthew Dzisiak, and his beloved son-in-law, Eduard Koehl. He is survived by eleven children, 44 grandchildren, and one sibling, Fr. Vincent Thompson, C.S.B. The family gratefully acknowledges the people whose faith and love underpinned their professional care for Dad: Ronald Frias, Dr. Jennifer Wilson, Marcia, Dianne, and Margaret. And we thank especially those many priests and religious who attended to Dad’s spiritual needs, including: Fr. John, Fr. Roy, Fr. Liam, Fr. Kenneth, Fr. Boyd, Fr. Barringer, Brother Xavier, the Discalced Carmelite Nuns, and Dad’s brother, Fr. Vincent. Dad’s wake was held at the Low and Low Funeral Home, 23 Main St. S. Uxbridge (905) 852-3073 on Tuesday, May 17, 2011 from 2 - 4 p.m. and 6 - 8 p.m. His Funeral Mass was held at the Saint Basil’s Church (50 St. Joseph St. Toronto) on Wednesday, May 18, 2011 at 10:00 a.m. Interment Holy Cross Cemetery, Thornhill. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Campaign Life Coalition, 104 Bond St, Suite 300, Toronto, ON, M5B 1X9.

Martyn, Harold
Port Perry Chapel
Harold Martyn of Blackstock passed away peacefully on February 22, 2011 a fitting day as it was Lord Baden Powell’s birthday, and Harold was proud to be the first Cub Master in Blackstock. He was born Jan. 28, 1917 in Hampton, Ontario to Edith and Albert Martyn. As the third of eight children, he left home at the age of 14 to work as a water boy for the road crew building Scugog Road, and for several years worked as a farm hand and in lumber camps during the winter. A few years later, while employed by Russell Wright, he met the 16 year old farmer’s daughter next door, Dora Shantz. They courted on a BSA motorcycle until he left in 1941 to defend his country, serving in the Italian campaign, and eventually reaching Holland for the liberation in 1945. He returned to a jubilant meeting at Exhibition Stadium in Toronto in Feb. 1946 and married Dora in May of that same year. He worked for Oshawa Box and Lumber, and Canada Bread before he and Dora ventured into storekeeping at Martyn's Corner Store in Blackstock, May of 1949. In the ensuing years they shared many adventures with their three sons, Ron, Blair and Todd, three daughter-in-laws, Ellie, Jan and Kelly, and eight loved grandchildren and grandchildren-in-laws Amanda, Luke and Keiko, Josh, Julia, Brian, Tim and his fiancé Lara.
Harold was a man of many passions. He had a passion for motorcycles (riding his BMW bolt upright until age 89), the farm in Bethany, square dancing with Dora, traveling, story telling and his family. He also had a passion for foreign places, foreign people and foreign languages. He prided himself, and sometimes embarrassed us all, as he spoke at least two words (and on a good day three!) of many, many languages. Even when he guessed the wrong language for the person, his intentions were always good and he usually found a way to make a positive connection anyway! A good man, he has enriched all our lives, and we will miss him. We are comforted knowing that he is joining his son Blair and granddaughter Amanda. Join us for a memorial service at the Blackstock United Church on Monday, Feb 28th at 11:00 a.m., with a lunch and communal storytelling in his honour to follow. In lieu of flowers, come prepared to share your reflections or memories of Harold, knowing that your story will never be as long as the many he told.
Arrangements entrusted to Low and Low Funeral Home, Port Perry. If you wish memorial donations can be made to Blackstock United Church Fund through Low and Low Funeral Home, Port Perry, Ontario 905 985 7331.
